CFP: SSHA Chicago 2016 - Historical Geography and GIS Network  (February 20 deadline)

The Historical Geography and GIS Network of the Social Science History Association invites you to take part in the 41st annual meeting of the SSHA, November 17-20, 2016 in Chicago, Illinois.

We are seeking complete panels as well as individual papers.

The Historical Geography and GIS Network has an active membership of scholars who utilize geographic information systems (GIS) and other spatial tools to tackle a wide range of historical problems.  We also offer a place for human geographers who study spatial relationships of cultural, social, and environmental  change and continuity.  We encourage papers and panels that utilize spatial concepts, geographic thinking and various methods to ask new historical questions as well as to revisit old ones. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Racial Spaces and Segregation
  • Urban Immigration
  • Rural, Urban, and Transnational Migrations
  • Spatial Demography
  • Qualitative Applications of GIS / Humanities GIS in the study of literary sources
  • Political Networks and Diffusion
  • Built Environment
  • Geographic Patterns in World History
  • MIxed Methods using GIS and Texts
  • Urban Social Networks
  • Industrial Heritage
  • Environmental Histories
  • Spatial theory and Spatial Scales of Resolution and Analysis
  • Spatial Statistics and Modeling
  • Historical Gazetteers
  • Teaching Historical GIS and Spatial History
  • Documenting, Archiving, and Publishing Historical Geospatial Data

The theme for this year’s conference is “Beyond Social Science History: Knowledge in an Interdisciplinary World”, which encourages new perspectives and novel collaborations with colleagues in fields beyond “geography” per se. Nonetheless, all paper and panel submissions will be considered. We also encourage cross-network sponsorship of panels. For more information please refer to the SSHA website: www.ssha.org .

The deadline for papers and/or panel submissions is February 20, 2016. The SSHA requests that submissions be made by means of its web conference management system, available after December 1. Paper proposals should include title, brief abstract and contact information. Panel proposals should include an organizer, discussant, and at least 3 paper presenters.

If you have any questions or need assistance putting together a panel please contact one of the network co-chairs, George Vascik ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
